William Lyman Sale, Jr.
Former US Army Chaplain (age 88) passed away March 16, 2024 from complications after a heart attack.
A precocious student in Martin, GA, Lyman graduated high school at 15, University of Maryland at 19, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in his early twenties. As a Chaplain in the “Old Guard” at Fort Myer during the Vietnam War, Lyman presided over more than 100 weddings and 600 funerals in Arlington National Cemetery. He also served as an advisor to Sam Houston Johnson at the White House. After the military, Lyman sold real estate and retired to Florida where he served for 10 years on his homeowners association.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Lynn Sale, sister Elizabeth Stange, four children: Ed, Anita, Laura, Don, seven grandchildren Robert, Jenny, Jonathan, Mitchell, Max, Brett, Elliot, and four great-grandchildren Jude, Grant, Garrett, and Sage.
He was an avid painter, and later in life took up cooking as a hobby. We will never have another pot roast as good as the ones he made. He is already sorely missed.
Service will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery April 22 at 11:30 a.m. https://www.cem.va.gov/cems/nchp/sarasota.asp
