Michael Scahill Obituary

Michael Scahill, 90, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away on April 2, 2025.

Born on September 3, 1934, in Charleston, South Carolina, Michael proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and later in the U.S. Naval Reserve for 16 years. A dedicated and skilled electrician by trade, he was known not only for his craftsmanship but also for his humor and poetry.

Michael was an avid bridge player and a lifelong music lover. He sang in numerous church choirs and local theater productions, sharing his voice with his community throughout his life. In 2018, a hymn he composed was performed for the first time by the choir at his church — a moment of great pride and joy.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pal Knaapen of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, with whom he raised five children: Michael Joseph Scahill, James Joseph (Abigail) Scahill, Laura Mary (David) Coyle, Karen Mary (Steven) Leonard, and Marjorie Mary (Cuneyit) Sutcuoglu. Michael was a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, Burton Joseph and Anne Irene Major Scahill, and his sisters Mary Frances, Nancy Ellen, Melinda Ruth, and Suzanne Irene. He is survived by his two brothers, Barry Andrew, and Bernard Joseph (Debra) Scahill.

A memorial service will be held in Sarasota later this year. Michael and his wife will be laid to rest together at Sarasota National Cemetery.
