It is with great sadness that we announce the recent passing of our mother, Margaret Hedwig
Griffin on November 12, 2024, at the age of eighty-four.
Margaret was born on September 27, 1940, in Berlin Germany to Rudolph Seyfert and Helena
(Lang) Seyfert. At the age of 5 her family fled from Berlin to her mother’s hometown of
Waldbrunn-Hintermeilingen, south of Frankfurt. There her father, an engineer, made radios for
the farmers until eventually working for Siemens in Frankfurt.
Margaret trained as an administrator and worked for the AIS insurance company when she met
Robert, “Bob” Griffin who was stationed with the US Army in Frankfurt. They were married on
October 27, 1964, and soon moved to the US where Bob continued his training and military
service.
While Bob was stationed in Korea, Margaret worked as a server in Long Beach California before
moving to Savannah GA and then Berlin, Germany for Bob’s next transfers.
While in Berlin, Margaret was a cashier for the Officers Club and she and Bob enjoyed the many
German festivities while raising Beatrice and Margaret’s daughter Anita.
In 1976, Margaret and her family moved to Augusta GA where Margaret enrolled in Augusta
Technical College earning her certification as a licensed practical nurse. She worked at
University Hospital in their post op department until 1982.
Margarets passion for animals led her to volunteer and later become Treasurer for the Augusta
Humane Society. She also personally rescued dozens of animals finding permanent homes for
them and keeping a few of her own along the way.
While in Viriginia Margaret enjoyed the many activities of the German club and became a
member and officer of the Moose Lodge.
Margaret was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is
survived by her daughters Anita Wilson (Robert) and Beatrice Spoerl (Scott), her grandchildren
Alexandria Eberhardt (Jamie), Jacob Spoerl and Joshua Spoerl and by her great-grandson
Aizen Eberhardt.
