Gerald John Schebendach
February 5, 1946 - August 4, 2023
Dover, New Jersey native and Vietnam War veteran Gerald John Schebendach passed away on August 4, 2023, in Sarasota, Florida, after a short illness. He was 77.
Gerald graduated from Dover High School in 1965 and served in the US Army as an Infantry soldier and airship gunner during the Vietnam War, with documentation noting his service in the 1st Air Cavalry. He completed two tours and was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class after nearly three years of service, including one year in the US Army Reserve. His decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, along with two Overseas Service Bars.
After the war, Gerald worked briefly at the Dover Post Office before relocating to Sarasota, Florida. He earned his living as a skilled handyman and repairman, leveraging his natural talents to work on electronics, gas engines, and more. His ingenuity and resourcefulness served him well in his local community.
Gerald also pursued his passions for Ham Radio Operation (KE4DIY) and genealogy, sharing his research with his niece Donna daily.
Gerald is predeceased by his father, Charles J. Schebendach, Sr. (1980), mother, Bertha A. Schebendach née Sosenko (2004), brother, Charles J. Schebendach (2012), and niece, Carol Hopman née Schebendach (2016). He is survived by his niece Donna Schebendach Herrmann (Long Valley, NJ), great-niece Hannah (Hillsborough, NJ), and cousin Kenneth Schebendach (New York).
A funeral service will be held on June 24, 2025, at 11:30 am at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, Pennsylvania. Fellow service members are welcome to attend.
