Elayne C. Peabody passed away peacefully at her beloved Bay Village in Sarasota Florida on July 20, 2024
having reached the age of 95 on July 1st.
Born in Baltimore city, she was a graduate of McDaniel College and held a Master of Library and
Information Studies from the University of Rhode Island. She married Robert W Peabody Jr in December
1951 in Baltimore. They resided in the Greenwood, Warwick Neck, and Cowesett sections of Warwick,
Rhode Island. She was a librarian at Roger Williams University’s Broad Street Providence YMCA campus.
She retired from the Foster-Glocester Regional School District in 1994. She lived for 35 years in the Hill
and Harbour district of East Greenwich and was active at the Westminster Unitarian Church. She moved
to Bay Village in 2008 after she sold her house in Venice.
She loved nature: watching birds, counting for the Frog Listening Network, and counting for the Florida
Butterfly Monitoring Network. But mostly she liked cataloging plants with the Florida Native Plant
Society because plants move ever so slowly. Of course, she liked books and quiet.
She is survived by her two sons, Robert III of Portland Maine, William (Debbie) of Springfield Virginia,
and grandson William Jr. (Lauren) and great granddaughter Lily.
