Dennis Geary Lynch (age 77), passed away August 15, 2025 with his wife by his bedside and under the care of Tidewell Hospice. He was a resident of North Port, FL since 2004 and previously of West Yarmouth, MA. He was predeceased by his parents Robert and Marie (Geary) Lynch. He is survived by his wife, Marsha Black Lynch, of almost 23 years, and his brother Robert D. Lynch (wife Gisele) of Las Vegas, NV. Additional survivors include his daughter Jennifer Silva (husband George) of Wilmington, MA and step-sons Eric McCarthy (wife Fran) and Dennis McCarthy, of Greensboro, NC.
Dennis battled cancer courageously and without complaint for nearly three years. He also did his best to lift others up with conversation and good humor as they shared time in treatment areas. Our family wishes to thank staff at Florida Cancer Specialists/North Port and Advocate Radiation Oncology/Port Charlotte for their support and care during his journey. Staff with Tidewell Hospice and Village On the Isle provided amazing and compassionate care in his last days. Thank you also to All Veterans-All Families LLC for their assistance with his arrangements.
His parents welcomed Dennis into the world August 31, 1947 in Chelsea, MA. He always spoke fondly of his happy childhood growing up near Boston and frequenting Revere Beach for family outings. He laughed about how his mother would have him read poetry out loud if he misbehaved. He admired his father for many talents such as building a boat, teaching him to swim as a toddler, and dancing on roller skates.
After high school in Wilmington, MA, Dennis worked briefly at the Boston Navy Yard with his dad and before joining the US Army in 1967. One of his proudest achievements was earning his Jump Wings in Airborne School, Ft. Benning, GA and joining the 82nd Airborne. He later transferred to the 173rd Airborne when volunteering for Vietnam. He served as a Specialist 4 and squad leader there in the Central Highlands 1968-1969 during the Tet Offensive. Dennis was fortunate to survive as a combat veteran and also as a tunnel rat where he went underground into enemy operations through their tunnels.
After an Honorable Discharge (1969), his family was grateful for his return to the Boston area where he worked in construction trades. He became a skilled Master Carpenter and eventually obtained his General Contractor’s License. He owned a small construction company with a partner and employed ten personnel. When his parents retired to Cape Cod, he sold his partnership, followed his parents, and focused on custom residential building.
For fun, Dennis was an excellent darts and billiards player. He was a diehard Boston Red Sox fan, win or lose, and also an avid one for the New England Patriots and Boston Bruins. He loved sports and could easily recount names of players across teams, special plays, and championships. He had a great mind for detail and could remember players in bands over decades, hits, and songs on the flip side of 45’s!
Among friends, Dennis was often the life of any gathering with his quick (Irish) wit and funny stories. He never met a stranger and was known for generosity and willingness to help others. He was also one to rescue an animal in need and always had at least one, if not several, pets.
Dennis will be missed by many friends and family for a long, long time. His memorial service will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Rd. 72 (exit #205, aka Clark Rd.) on NOVEMBER 3 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to your favorite charity supporting veterans or animals. A family favorite is https://www.puppiesbehindbars.com serving veteran and first responder recipients along with prisoners selected to provide puppy training. Our family appreciates your thoughtful prayers and support during our loss of a wonderful husband, brother, father, and friend.
